The goal is not to compress to the maximum
When an image is too heavy, the temptation is to apply the strongest possible compression. The problem is that aggressive downscaling can introduce blockiness, blurred edges, and loss of detail. To share a photo, it is usually best to look for the point where the file size decreases without the change being evident to the naked eye.
Recommended process
- Open the compressor and load the original photo.
- Start with the balanced level.
- Compare the original weight with the result.
- See faces, small text, and highly detailed areas.
- If you still need less weight, try higher compression.
Which images tend to reduce best
Large photos taken with cameras or phones often have room to shrink. A screenshot or a file that has already been compressed several times can save much less. The format also influences: a photograph may behave differently in JPG, PNG or WebP.
When to convert in addition to compress
If the file is in PNG but is a non-transparent photo, converting it to JPG or WebP can reduce the size considerably. If you need transparency, keep PNG or WebP.
Check before sending
Don't just focus on the number of kilobytes. The best compression is the one that meets your need and keeps the image clear enough for the person who will receive it.
