Why does an image PNG weigh so much and how to reduce it

PNG is not designed for everything

PNG is great when you need transparency, graphics with sharp edges, or certain image types. However, a complex photo saved as PNG can take up much more space than an equivalent version in a format intended for photos.

First identify if you need transparency

If the image has a transparent background that you need to keep, PNG may still be the correct choice. In that case, try an optimization before changing formats.

For photographs consider another exit

If it is a normal photo without transparency, JPG or WebP may be more practical options. Convert a copy, adjust the quality and compare the visual result with the original PNG.

Don't confuse dimensions with weight

Two 2000 × 2000 pixel images can have very different file sizes. Content, format and compression influence weight, not just the number of pixels.

Keep the original PNG if it is a master resource

If the file is part of a graphics project, save the original. Generate optimized versions for web, mail, or publishing without replacing the master copy.
