How to crop a square profile photo without warping it

Cropping is not stretching

To obtain a square photo you should not force width and height independently. The correct thing to do is to select a 1:1 area within the original image and eliminate what is outside.

Place the subject first

Before closing the frame, place the main face or object within the area you actually want to keep. Leave a little space around it because some platforms show the photo inside a circle.

Use the 1:1 ratio to help

In the crop editor you can choose 1:1 to keep a square while changing its size. That ratio is optional: the content of the photo is never warped, only the selected area changes.

Avoid cutting too close

If the face or logo touches the edges of the square, a subsequent circular mask can crop it further. A small margin usually produces a more flexible profile photo.

Check the final resolution

After cropping, review the resulting dimensions. A very small crop of a large photo may look good as a thumbnail but lose sharpness if you enlarge it later.
